  • The Econoclave is an energy efficient EC6X12 Econoclave

The Econoclave ® 6X12 is a great composite autoclave for small to medium-sized production parts.   It provides a useable diameter of 72” (1828 mm) and a working length of 144” (3657 mm). You can choose from standard models that provide maximum operating temperatures of 450°F (232°C) and 800°F (427 °C) and maximum operating pressures of 150 psi and 200 psi.

Note: If you require higher operating conditions, ASC can configure a non-standard model.

  • The working diameter is 72” (1828 mm) with a working length of 144” (3657 mm).
  • Aerospace-grade autoclave, designed for composite bonding and curing.
  • Fully-integrated and 100% factory tested prior to shipping.  A skid-mounted control system, power system, vacuum system, cooling tank (optional), and other auxiliaries are plumbed, wired, and tested at ASC’s factory.

  • High-capacity vacuum source lines with PC-controlled Vacuum/Vent valves for automated selection, isolation, and leak-testing.
    • Each line includes a manual isolation valve and resin filter traps with a manual drain.
    • Stainless-steel tubing
  • Vacuum probe lines for vacuum bag monitoring
  • Stainless-steel tubing
  • Vacuum transducer for accurate bag vacuum recording and alarming.
  • Proprietary sheet metal retaining requiring no fasteners, screws, or rivets to create future FOD issues.
MODEL # EC6X12-150P550F - TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

Econoclave Notes:

  1. The exterior dimensions are approximated due to fabrication and assembly tolerances. If you require a smaller equipment footprint, please contact ASC to discuss your size constraints.
  2. For Econoclaves with an integrated computer shelf, the exterior width includes the shelf. Because the Econoclave is shipped without the shelf, shipping width will be reduced by approximately 8" (203mm).
  3. Lengths shown are based on an integrated system that includes the skid platform and a closed-loop cooling system.
  4. If the above dimensions, operating conditions, or specifications do not meet your exact requirements, please contact ASC to discuss a custom autoclave configuration.
  5. ASME is the standard pressure vessel design code for the US, Canada, and dozens of other countries. In all cases, ASC will design to meet the appropriate codes, however for non-ASME jurisdictions, there will be a slight increase in price. These additional codes are explained in the "Available Options" tab and in the request forms. For the European Union, please choose PED (Pressure Equipment Directive). For China, please choose CHI (China Pressure Vessel Certificate). For Japan, please choose JIS (Japan Industrial Standards).
  6. The autoclave will be internally insulated for the maximum operating temperature shown. Because the autoclave is internally insulated, the pressure vessel will not be subjected to internal temperatures and therefore the pressure vessel steel is not required to be rated at maximum temperature and is rated per code at 450 °F (232 °C).
  7. Maximum heating and cooling rates are based on average air-temperature rates with the autoclave at maximum pressure and loaded according to the "Thermal load during test" value. During the max heating rate test, the autoclave will be heated at maximum power from ambient to the maximum operating temperature. When the air temperature reaches maximum temperature, the elapsed heating time will be used to calculate the average rate. MaxTemp - AmbientTemp)/elapsed time.
  8. Maximum cooling rates are based on average air-temperature rates from maximum operating temperature to 140 °F (60 °C) with the autoclave at maximum pressure and loaded according to the "Thermal load during test" value. During the max cooling rate test, the autoclave will be loaded with the thermal load, heated to the maximum operating temperature, soaked for 30 minutes, and then rapidly cooled. When the air temperature reaches below 140 °F (60 °C) the elapsed cooling time will be used to calculate the average rate. (MaxTemp - 140) / elapsed time.
  9. Uniformity is taken at steady-state conditions and is based on thermocouples being placed not closer than 4 inches from the side, rear, or front of the autoclave. At higher temperatures, automatic air temperature biasing might be utilized in the control system in order to center the thermocouples within the tolerance band.
  10. The maximum external shell temperature is based on ambient shop temperatures of not more than 90 °F (32 °C). If the ambient temperature is higher than this, the external surface temperature might exceed the value shown in the specification. Temperatures around nozzles, flanges, and other penetrations might exceed this value, but in these cases, ASC will suitably guard the region to provide personnel safety. If any portion of the autoclave is exposed to direct sunlight, surface temperatures will exceed this value due to radiant energy effects.
  11. ASC rates the pressure vessel 15 psi (1.1 bar) over the normal maximum working pressure. Although not specifically required by code, this is a good measure to ensure that the safety relief valve is not triggered during normal operations.
  12. Pressurization rates are based on the average rate from 0 psig (0 bar) to maximum operating pressure. This rate is based on the customer's supply pressure being at least 50 psig (3.5 bar) above ASC's maximum operating pressure. If the customer's supply pressure is lower than the average autoclave pressurization rate will drop accordingly. Depressurization rates are based on the average rate from maximum operating pressure to less than 1 psig (70 mbar).
  13. The full-load amperage will increase with the addition of a cooling system, vacuum pumps, etc. For exact amperage for optional configurations, please contact ASC.
  14. Smaller autoclaves with standard manual operating door swing and ring rotation can be upgraded with an optional hydraulic package. See options.
  15. Although Econoclaves come standard with a specific number of vacuum sources, probes, and thermocouples, you can request alternate quantities when filling in the request form.
  16. For those customers who intend on producing parts for Boeing or Boeing's sub-suppliers, please be aware that Boeing's autoclave certification D6-49327 requires a minimum of 9 part thermocouples.
  17. The Econoclave can be ordered to accommodate any of the world's power requirements. See PW options for more details.

VS - Vessel design and construction code

Although many countries accept the ASME Division I, Section VIII pressure vessel standard, there are cases where an alternate pressure vessel code will be required. In these cases, there will be additional costs that are required for authorized inspection services.

PW - Power, voltage, frequency selection

Although the standard Econoclave autoclave is designed for 480 volt / 3phase service and 24 volt control power, we can design it to accommodate any international voltage and frequency requirement.

CL - Cooling system options

The autoclave utilizes water for auxiliary cooling requirements (ie. fan motor capsule) and for main cooling requirements. Some customers prefer to utilize their own water delivery system, however the majority of Econoclave buyers prefer that ASC provide an integrated cooling system for the equipment.

VP - Vacuum pumps

While some customers prefer to use in-house vacuum systems to supply vacuum to the Econoclave, most prefer that a dedicated pump or pumps be provided on the Econoclave skid.

VR - Controlled vacuum receiver system

Many composite applications require full vacuum during and or at the beginning of the cure cycle. In these cases, there is little need to control the level of the vacuum to the parts. However, for high-temperature polyimids and honeycomb reinforced parts, there is often the need to provide partial vacuum (ie. -10"Hg) to the parts. In these cases you will need to have a controlled vacuum receiver.

VT - VacTrap ™ chilled resin traps

For composite curing applications with high volatile content (ie. high-temperature polyimides), we recommend chilled VacTrap ™ assemblies instead of the conventional ambient temperature filter traps. The VacTrap will be much more effective condensing volatiles and solvents during high-temperature curing operations.

PG - Purge system with oxygen monitoring

Most composite autoclaves utilize nitrogen as the pressurization media. After a cure cycle, there is a need to purge the nitrogen from the autoclave and bring in fresh breathable air prior to allowing personnel to enter the autoclave.
